History !

Before this site on Harlem Road became vacant, it was previously a gasoline station from 1950 to the 1970s. From there, the site was replaced with a nursery/garden center from the mid-1980's to 2014. The site is approximately 0.43 acres and is located in the town of Cheektowaga. Surrounding the area, there are a mix of residential and commercial building and businesses. Hazard Evaluations Inc. had run tests on the site and found that the prior gas station and greenhouse had led to some form of contamination on the site. Petroleum had impacted the soil and pipes which led to NYSDEC Spill #1410324 being assigned to the site to come up with a clean up plan.

Cleanup Plan

In 2019, a cleanup plan to address the contamination on the site was completed and met its requirements. American Tire Inc. - the company that performed the cleanup - had removed and disposed of 8,000-gallon and 5,000-gallon underground storage tanks. They also disposed of 14,200-gallons of petroleum that has already affected the groundwater.

Audience

The audience intended for this remediation are residents of buffalo, investors, and environmental activists. Without investors, any remediation plan cannot go through without funds. With residents and activists being aware of the site, it will promote them to work together and convince others to donate, fund, and invest in remediating the site.

Remediation Plan

Some ideas I have for the site are to remediate the soil and sediments. The cleanup plan had already met the requirements to remediate the the groundwater and excavate anything remaining on the site. To further improve the site and environment, the NYSDEC should make a new cleanup plan and include bioreactors to remediate the groundwater and improve it more. Based of the information provided in this multimodal piece, I can remediate my essay by including more about the cleanup plan that has occurred and including all four plans that had been accounted for from 2017 - 2019. I can also include any information that I can find about plans on development on the site.
